DETAILS
On September 20, 1943 the Ellinico Horio with transport barges F308 and F123 were anchored at the port of Karpathos (Scarpanto) with 550 disarmed Italian infantry soldiers bound to Agios Nikolaos (Crete). A group of six Beaufighter planes flying at low attitude attacked the vessels causing damage to the Ellinico Horio. During the attack the ship's Greek captain was seriously injured and there were also casualties among the Italian soldiers (some of them drowned when they jumped into the sea). The Ellinico Horio had to remain at the port of Karpathos for the necessary repairs. Work was conpleted five days later but during the late hours of September 25 the ship was seized by a Greek crew and an unknown number of Italian prisoners who made a desperate attempt to reach a free port at Cyrpus or Palestine. When morning came the fugitives were spotted by Gerrman planes off the island of Karpathos while following a southeastern course. The planes attacked the ship after there was no response to their warnings. The Ellinico Horio took fire and sank shortly afterwards with no recorded survivors.
LOSS OF LIFE
At least 7 Italian soldiers drowned during the first attack on September 20, 1943.
